An alis is a clay paint used to color walls, typically applied by a woman known as an “enjauradora”. The men mixed these paints.
The healthiest paints are natural, period. Historically paints were formulated from natural pigments, clay and milk. These natural materials do not only keep harmful chemicals out of our homes but also actually clean the air through ion exchange.
Historically milk paints were used on wood furniture. The typical look is the antique crackled look of painted furniture. Clay paints known as “alis” has been used for hundreds of years on earthen walls. Now all these paints readily available and can be used on walls, ceiling and furniture.
There are limited colors available for both types of finishes. Milk paints are fairly flat, available in 20 colors, can be intentionally crackled and finished with a glaze. Clay paints are available in ten colors, and have a flat sheen. The natural colors are beautiful accents, subtle and intentional.
