Old brine tanks were made from wood that can be dismantled and made into flooring. They will have color stains such as green from brined pickles, bright pink from cherries or blank white from bleach tanks.
Our landfills are being filled at alarming rates. Over 50% of the contents of the waste yards, dumps are filled with construction demolition and construction debris. Most old buildings, bridges, water and brine tanks were once built of old growth woods. Much of these woods are no longer available except through salvage operations. Most reclaimed woods also have color changes, nail and bolt holes and other forms of “character”. These markings tell as story of a place in time in history that can be honored by suing reclaimed woods.
Reclaimed woods can be used throughout a home in cabinets, doors, trim and casing and floors. These woods are most commonly harder than newer woods and maintain a character that is unique to the particular piece.
Reclaimed woods are most affordable and have the least environmental impact when sourced locally. In the west common species are redwood, Douglas fir, hemlock, cedar, oak and maple. In the mid west and south heart pine, cherry, and maple are more common. In the east cherry, pear, pine and fir are most common while the Far East produces teak from old railroad ties.
